Voie Vert (Green Way) Through Fontaines

There is a wonderful bike/walking path (“Voie Vert“) along the barge canal passing through Chagny, Fontaines, Chalon sur Saone and beyond.  It has numerous locks to pass passenger boats along the canal with “self service” ropes you pull to activate the gates, flood or drain the lock and pass you through to the next level.  Very popular with vacation barges and rental boaters.  Bicycles, pedestrians and all sorts of traffic frequent the voie vert.  They have excellent signage, directional maps and service pointers along the way.  They cross roads every few kilometers (or more frequently), and little restaurants, bars, hotels and services are often found along the path.  Really, really nice and a joy to have.  Watch out for patrolling service cars along the path, they can creep up on you if you don’t pay attention.  Wonderful feature of our little valley in Bourgogne.

Quote:
The “Voie Verte” course, developed by the Saône-&-Loire Departmental Council, consists of a cycling path more than 120 km long laid out on a paved, smooth rolling surface along a former railroad line and canal towpaths.
A number of facilities and services are accessible all along the route: car parking lots, water faucets, lavatories, picnic grounds, shaded rest stops, benches, bicycle parking, bike and roller skate rentals and skate parks, among others…

A total of 24 touring loops for the cyclist, all well-marked , are associated with the “Voie Verte”; they have been designed to allow exploring and relishing the artistic and cultural life experienced here in Southern Burgundy.

A “Voie Verte development programme”, voted by the Saône-&-Loire Departmental Council, calls for a network of some 400 km of cycling paths throughout the department over a 5-year horizon.”
