For Spring vacation, we booked a week at the Villa Rossi near the walled city of Lucca, Italy. (tourist information) Anne and Stephane’s family, as well as Becky and Vic joined us for several days amid trips to Pisa, Florence, Viareggio (seaside beach resort) and Lucca.

When you book a villa on a hillside in Italy with small, winding, narrow roads, expect to hear the gentle “beep, beep, beep” of morning commuters making their way down the hillsides as they warn potentially oncoming traffic of their existence around the bends.  This can happen early in the morning and continue through the day into evening.  Sometimes the peace and quiet of the narrow country roads is not what you expect it to be!  Above our floor in the villa live some professional jazz musicians who practice during the day and sometimes into the evening.  Villa in Tuscany, free jazz. Not bad.

A few dinners at Restaurant Mecanate were within walking distance along the tiny, sunken roadways. Inexpensive, delicious traditional Tuscan cooking, and the staff and clients were tolerant of tired children!  Superb wine selection, including some biodynamic, organic choices.  While it rained most of the time, there were a few bluebird days of gentle breeze, bright Tuscan sunshine and springtime blooming plants.

Trips into Lucca provided delicious olive oil, cured meats, fresh pastas and wines to keep everyone fed and happy.  Amid the tiny piazzas and shops, churches and towers of Lucca lies a tiny wine merchant shop called Enoteca Vanni.  Beneath the storefront containing one small counter and a floor-to-ceiling set of shelves stuffed with fabulous wines of Italy lies nearly 52,000 bottles of cellared Italian wine waiting to be explored. Dizzying and fantastic.
